This was an introductory lecture I gave to PhD students in June 2021 as part of a two-day seminar on the work of Stuart Hall organised by Tony Fisher and me for the London Arts and Humanities Partnership, which funds postgraduate researchers, and supported by the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. The two days featured introductory lectures from us and contributions from Natasha Bonnelame, Jeremy Gilbert, Kojo Koram and Gilane Tawadros. I’ve had a few requests for the text, but since I always talk from notes rather than writing this kind of lecture out, I’ve put the recording up on YouTube for anyone who’s interested.

NB: I’ve removed the questions and discussion in the interests of the students’ privacy, and have had to trim out the excerpt from Isaac Julien’s film Frantz Fanon: Black Skin White Mask for copyright reasons, but I think the point is clear without it.
